    Aloha Hawaii! OfficeMax Delivers Great Savings and Quick Service to the Aloha State


    Brigham Young University- Hawaii (BYUH) is a four-year undergraduate institution that educates 2,400 students each year from 70 countries in Asia, the Pacific, the United States and other parts of the world. The university focuses on educating the minds, hearts and characters of students, sharpening their integrity and their desire to serve.

    As a buyer at BYUH, Grace Lee has spent the last two-and-a-half years working with suppliers to meet the purchasing needs of various departments on campus. According to Lee, the University has recently started utilizing the Cooperative’s OfficeMax agreement to purchase everything from paper, printers and toner, to envelopes, chairs and calculators.

    Lee estimates that BYUH spent approximately $63,000 with OfficeMax in 2006, and realized a savings of about $27,000 by utilizing the E&I agreement.

    In addition to advantageous pricing, BYUH appreciates the superior level of service provided by OfficeMax. “On a scale of one to ten with ten being the highest, I would rate OfficeMax an eight,” she said. “We really appreciate the fact that everything is so easy to order, and the quick delivery is great. We actually receive in-stock items the next business day. OfficeMax also set up net usage reports for us, so we can generate reports on our purchases by departments at any time. These kinds of benefits are extremely helpful to us.”

    While BYUH and other Hawaiian members are saving significantly with the Cooperative’s OfficeMax contract, the process behind making this happen was not an easy one. In fact, while many members in Hawaii were actually already purchasing from OfficeMax, E&I’s agreement was not available to them. The Cooperative faced a number of unique challenges in terms of extending its OfficeMax contract to Hawaiian members, primarily with respect to the increased costs of shipping to the islands. To address these challenges, E&I and OfficeMax worked together to gather input from local members and ultimately develop a plan that extended the Cooperative’s contract to Hawaii.

    “Last year, we approached our representative at OfficeMax to ask about accessing the E&I agreement, and were disappointed to learn they were not part of the program,” Lee explained. “Once things changed and the Cooperative’s contract was extended, they contacted us immediately.” She went on to say that she would definitely recommend the Cooperative’s contract to other Hawaiian members for a number of reasons, including the great pricing and quick service.

    Overall, Lee believes that BYUH’s membership in E&I is about more than cost savings. She explained that she enjoys a close relationship with E&I representatives, who are always available to help with purchases, to answer questions, and to provide additional information about contracts. “Our E&I membership is a real advantage for us, because it gives us the opportunity to take advantage of tremendous savings and purchasing power,” she said.

    While serving as Director for Business Administration and Support, Maggie has taken the lead on a variety of campus-wide special projects, which include creating a campus-wide space management system, in addition to chairing a system-wide capital renewal deferred maintenance task force.

    Maggie has been active in the Association for Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA) for the past 25 years, most recently serving as International President. She is also Chair of APPA’s Strategic Assessment Model (SAM) Task Force as well as Co-Chair of a newly developing Center for Facilities Research.

    Maggie has contributed numerous articles to APPA’s Facilities Manager Magazine and has been a contributing author to two strategic Assessment Model publications. She has presented to audiences all over the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom.

    E&I is focused on bringing a broad, cross-functional perspective to the Board, in order to better serve our diverse membership.
