Selecting Paint is More than Just Aesthetics & Durability
| January 9, 2019 | By Sherwin-Williams
Today, aesthetics and durability are not the only considerations when specifying paint. There are several new, unique, and innovative features that are important to understand before selecting product for the next project.
Enhanced Indoor Air Quality and Elimination of Odors
Technologically advanced paints improve indoor air quality and help rooms stay fresh for longer periods of time. For example, paint with Formaldehyde Reducing Technology helps reduce the level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from possible sources like insulation, carpet, cabinets, and fabrics, while paints featuring Odor Elimination Technology help neutralize and reduce organic odors in a space. Sherwin-Williams Harmony® Paint is a zero-VOC formula that features these groundbreaking technologies.
Reduction of Mold and Mildew on the Paint Surface
Advanced coatings with anti-microbial agents prevent the growth of mildew and mold on the paint film, as well as inhibit bacterial odors. By minimizing paint film deterioration, these properties lessen the need for repaints and prolong the life of the coating.
Microbicidal properties in advanced coatings actually kill harmful bacteria on the painted surface – and continue doing so for extended periods of time. Sherwin-Williams Paint Shield® is the first EPA-registered microbicidal paint, with exclusive patented technology that kills greater than 99.9%% of Staph (Staphylococcus aureus), MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), E. coli (Escherichia coli), VRE (Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis), and Enterobacter aerogenes within two hours of exposure on a painted surface.
GREENGUARD Certification is part of UL Environment, a business unit of UL (Underwriters Laboratories). GREENGUARD Certification helps manufacturers create – and helps buyers and specifiers identify – interior products and materials (including paint) that have low chemical emissions, improving the quality of the air in which the products are used. The GREENGUARD Gold standard includes health-based criteria for additional chemicals and also requires lower total VOC emissions levels to ensure that products are acceptable for use in environments such as schools and healthcare facilities. All GREENGUARD Certified products are listed in the UL SPOT Sustainable Products Database. Sherwin-Williams also provides a comprehensive listing of all their paints that meet a variety of third-party standards.
Today’s advanced paint formulations are specially designed to stand up to wear and tear in high-traffic areas. The Sherwin-Williams line of Pro Industrial coatings combine industrial-strength performance with the pleasing appearance of traditional architectural paint and are engineered for demanding conditions, making them ideal for busy commercial and institutional environments.
Specifying paints that are aesthetically appealing, highly durable, and provide unique benefits can add incredible and lasting value to key building projects, leading to increased client satisfaction.
