The EDUCAUSE 2019 Top 10 IT Issues for Higher Education

At the 2018 EDUCAUSE Annual Conference last November, panel members described their findings on what will be the 2019 top 10 IT issues for Higher Education, and anticipated the impact of those issues for the year.  The list was developed by a panel of experts comprised of IT and non-IT leaders, CIOs and faculty members, and then voted on by EDUCAUSE members in an annual survey. Findings were based on the results of many factors, including studies, data, and analytics.

The ten issues cluster into three major themes:
  • Empowered Students
  • Trusted Data
  • 21st Century Business Strategies

Outcomes

A key takeaway is that the top issues seem broader and more strategic than past findings.  They’re less about technologies themselves, as they focus more on the objectives that IT can enable.  For the fourth consecutive year, however, Information Security Strategy was the number one issue identified.  Panelists pointed out that issues arise when campus security experts try to tackle too many responsibilities at once, which results in a slowdown of the new data project review processes.

The list points out the criticality of data use in student success—and shows the need for IT to partner with other areas of the campus to drive and achieve student success initiatives.

The findings can be used by institutions to get a jump start on 2019 planning.  They provide strategic direction to share with leadership, and give IT leaders a good understanding of what peers think the main IT issues for the year will be.
