Indoor Air Quality in Schools During COVID-19

Various IAQ Solutions to Help Face Unprecedented Challenges due to COVID-19

| by Carrier Enterprise

School administrators, educators, facility team leaders, and staff are experiencing unprecedented challenges involving indoor air quality (IAQ) due to the coronavirus pandemic. CDC and ASHRAE standards, recommendations, and guidelines involving HVAC systems continue to evolve as more and more data becomes available. Carrier Enterprise (CE) recommends that everyone should monitor the CDC and ASHRAE standards for updates on a regular basis.

Recent reports involving potential airborne transmission of the virus make preventive measures critical to providing the safest environment possible in our schools.

CE offers multiple IAQ solutions to meet the needs of schools and universities and comply with CDC and ASHRAE standards. CE has been an industry leader for indoor air quality solutions for many years and provide proven IAQ solutions to schools and universities.

For example, the Carrier OPTICLEAN dual mode negative air machine and air scrubber is offered in 600 and 1500 CFM configurations and is portable. It is designed to convert normal hospital rooms into airborne infectious isolation rooms. Meeting ASHRAE’s standard 170 for ventilation in healthcare facilities the unit creates a negative pressure vacuum affect too limit the spread of airborne contaminants. Long life HEPA filters are 99.97% efficient removing small particles as small as 0.3 microns. School applications include high density areas, class rooms and administration offices.

Established in 1993, NQ Industries Inc, offers a selection of portable units from 350 CFM to 2000 CFM that offer multiple levels of HEPA filtration and UV-C lighting to maximize the single pass kill rate of contaminants, bacteria, viruses and mold that pass thru the units. NQ Industry units are considered military and medical grade with installations at the following facilities:

  • Sloan Kettering Hospital, NYC
  • Walter-Reed ARMC, Washington DC
  • Kaiser Permanente, Pasadena and Oakland CA
  • Mayo Clinic
  • Mt Sinai Hospital, Ontario Canada
  • West Point Hospital, USMA
  • El Paso Children’s Hospital, El Paso, TX

The NQ Industries Inc NQ755W wall-mounted unit offers 4 levels of filtration, UV-C ultraviolet disinfection, quiet operation and 115v power for easy installation. Smart design makes it a great unit for class rooms, public areas and other high density work areas.

Existing HVAC Systems (Rooftops, PTACs, VTACs)

Established in 1982, Dust Free solutions offer multilayer protection involving MERV13 filtration, purification and UV-C sterilization that combine as part of the IAQ3 platform. Systems maximize value for schools on a tight budget. Installation typically takes 30 minutes or less per unit.

The Air Knight 14” IPG unit installed in commercial HVAC rooftop systems uses a unique process to naturally produce ionic oxidizers that actively seek out and purify pollutants. UV-C germicidal lights are utilized to kill contaminants, viruses, mold and bacteria in the ducts. Air Knight is not considered an ozone generator based on current EPA guidelines.

UV-C light stick and light stick plus keep HVAC coils clean to reduce on-going maintenance costs.

The Air Knight PX5 photo ionic oxidation solution for PTAC/VTAC units naturally produces oxidizers that actively seek out and purify pollutants in the air and on surfaces.

Environmental Surface Testing

Regular building surface testing offers an added layer of protection to insure your buildings are safe. Typically used in high traffic areas, surface testing helps you identify the presence of the virus on surfaces due to asymptomatic human transmission or contamination through the air on surfaces between cleanings. Accredited lab results are available in 24 hours through confidential chain of custody reporting. Improve your tracing efficiency and build confidence that your environment is safe.
