Organizations will bring proven technology and procurement expertise together to improve higher education technology buying
September 26, 2019 – Internet2, a non-profit, member-driven advanced technology community founded by the nation’s leading higher education institutions, and E&I Cooperative Services (E&I), the nation’s largest, member-owned, non-profit purchasing cooperative serving the needs of education, today announced a pilot project that aims to provide the U.S higher educational community with advanced technology solution contracts that meet generally accepted public procurement standards.
In this pilot, E&I and its RFP team will lead the competitive solicitation and award(s) process, leveraging the company’s decades of experience in public procurement. Internet2 will provide E&I and the RFP team with input with respect to certain technical requirements related to the RFP, leveraging the organization’s history of success in offering cloud solutions to the research and education community.
“Internet2 is very pleased to officially embark on this pilot project with E&I,” said Kevin Morooney, Vice President for Trust & Identity Services and NET+. “Many of our higher education members already work closely with E&I for competitive procurement. This pilot project will help us learn how to best pull together Internet2’s technical expertise and E&I’s procurement expertise to support national-scale evaluation, selection and negotiation of cloud services in support of our collective members.”
“I am excited about the combined strength of these organizations, which for the first time will open this critical catalog of enterprise solutions and services to E&I’s proven competitive solicitation process, and to many more institutions that may have previously had difficulty leveraging them due to procurement requirements,” stated Loren Malm, Chief Information Officer at Ball State University. “Combining the highly regarded procurement expertise of E&I with the technical review and services validation of Internet2 provides the higher education community with the very best of both organizations,” he concluded.
As the only purchasing cooperative focused exclusively on education, E&I has developed a robust technology portfolio, including hardware and software solutions for school operations, student information and learning management systems, and enterprise cloud solutions. Under this pilot project, both organizations will collaborate strategically to bring best-in-class technology solutions to market to serve the unique needs of the education community. A key goal for the pilot project will be to facilitate strategic collaboration between procurement and IT at colleges and universities nationwide.
“E&I has been working with Internet2 for the past two years to combine our unique and core competencies in procurement and technology to bring the best technology contracts to our collective membership,” stated Keith Fowlkes, Vice President, Technology at E&I. “As institutional technology requirements continue to evolve and scale, the challenges placed on higher education technology leaders have become ever more complex. Working in strategic collaboration with Internet2, E&I will continue to bring competitively solicited enterprise technology contracts to our collective membership. Ultimately, we expect this pilot project to provide CIOs, CTOs, and CPOs with greater confidence, choice, and flexibility in their institutional technology buying.”
E&I will be announcing a competitive solicitation under this pilot shortly, with an award anticipated in the first half of 2020. A group of E&I and Internet2 member institutions will review the pilot project and make recommendations for future collaboration among the two organizations, as well as opportunities for additional competitive solicitations.
