Procuring Green with E&I Cooperative Purchasing
Going green on today’s college campuses is about more than just recycling and energy conservation. Today’s higher ed institutions are committed to climate neutrality, significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and education and research on climate change.
Hundreds of institutions have pledged their commitment to sustainability by signing the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. The Commitment is a high-visibility effort to address global warming by garnering institutional commitments to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions and to accelerate the research and educational efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth's climate.
Presidents signing the Commitment are pledging to eliminate their campuses’ greenhouse gas emissions over time and ultimately to achieving climate neutrality.
Signatories are required to set specific, measurable goals within a definite time frame, and to incorporate proven models for achieving a lighter carbon footprint, including LEED building standards and ENERGY STAR certified products. While the goals certainly have some flexibility built in, each institution signing the Commitment promises to have a specific action plan in place within two years.
The Presidents’ Climate Commitment is being supported and implemented by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE).
