90+ Years of Member-First Procurement

Built different. Proven through every economic cycle. Delivering results today.

Built Different: The Member-Owned Advantage

On August 2, 1934, three visionary leaders filed papers establishing what would become E&I Cooperative Services. Their revolutionary idea: bring educational institutions together through cooperative purchasing to achieve what no single school could accomplish alone.

That founding principle still drives everything we do. As the only member-owned, nonprofit sourcing cooperative exclusively focused on education, every decision we make prioritizes member value over investor returns. When E&I succeeds, our members succeed—literally. We return profits through annual patronage refunds based on your participation throughout the year.

This structural difference matters more than ever. While for-profit procurement organizations answer to shareholders seeking maximum returns, E&I answers only to the 6,200+ educational institutions that own us. Our board is comprised of your peers—procurement leaders from universities and school districts who understand your challenges because they face them daily.

The result? Competitively solicited contracts created  with your actual needs in mind. Pricing structures that prioritize institutional savings over corporate margins. Services designed to solve education-specific procurement challenges, not generic enterprise buying problems.

Since 1934, we’ve never wavered from this model. No pivot to maximize shareholder value. No dilution of mission to chase market trends. Just 90+ years of steady, member-driven procurement partnership.

E&I's History

Proven Performance Through Every Economic Cycle

E&I was born during the Great Depression when schools desperately needed cost savings. That pressure forged our DNA: deliver measurable value when budgets are tight and stakes are high.

We’ve navigated every major economic disruption since. Post-WWII expansion drove our first national growth. The 1970s inflation crisis shaped our volume pricing strategies. The 2008 recession pushed us to formalize. COVID-19 forced rapid contract pivots for PPE and remote learning technology.

Each crisis reinforced a core truth: cooperative purchasing isn’t just smart in good times—it’s essential during bad ones. When individual institutions face budget cuts, collective buying power becomes even more valuable. When supply chains fracture, strong supplier relationships maintained over decades matter more than spot purchasing.

The current higher education financial landscape presents unprecedented challenges. Half of private universities generate operating deficits. Enrollment pressures continue to mount. Deferred maintenance backlogs now approach $1 trillion. Competition from for-profit procurement organizations has never been more intense.

Yet E&I is delivering stronger results than ever. Our members achieve 4-10% economic benefit  or more per contract by reducing RFP time and leveraging financial incentives. Total annual purchasing through E&I contracts now exceeds $3 billion. We maintain 260+ competitively solicited agreements across every major procurement category.

This performance isn’t accidental. It’s the compounding effect of 90+ years staying true to the same model: aggregate institutional demand, negotiate demonstrably better contract terms, and return maximum value to members.

History doesn’t guarantee future performance. But nine decades of consistent execution through every economic cycle proves our model works regardless of external challenges.

Why 90 Years Matters to Your Procurement Strategy

Our longevity isn’t a marketing point—it’s a performance indicator. Ninety years of member ownership means we’ve built procurement infrastructure specifically for education, not generic enterprise purchasing retrofitted for schools.

Demonstrably Better Contracts: Every new contract includes validated savings metrics and benchmarking against top alternatives. Our pooled volume models leverage collective spend from 6,200+ institutions to secure pricing and service levels no single school could negotiate alone.

Member-Driven Governance: Your peers guide contract development through advisory boards and committees. When members needed Title IX compliance support, we developed specialized contracts. When cybersecurity became critical, we responded with vetted solutions.

Beyond Transactions: E&I provides Strategic Spend Assessments at no cost to uncover hidden savings. Our EdPro Hub connects procurement professionals across institutions. The NextGen Leadership Program offers Cornell University certification fully funded by E&I.

Proven Scale: $3 billion in annual purchasing. 260+ competitively solicited contracts. 4-10% average economic benefit per contract through reduced RFP time and financial incentives.

This infrastructure took 90 years to build. For-profit competitors can’t replicate it because their model fundamentally differs. They extract value. We return it.
